Your nervous system consists of your brain, spinal cord and nerves. It’s your nervous system that controls and coordinates everything that happens in your body.
It works in two directions. Information coming in through your senses travels up to the brain, and then your brain decides what to do with that information and sends messages back to your body. Whether it’s how your heart is going to beat or how your leg is going to kick, nothing happens in the body without the nervous system sending and receiving messages. That’s why maintaining a healthy nervous system is vital to your overall health.
So how does the nervous system get unhealthy? The answer is: Stress.
Physical stress can include sitting at the computer too long, improper exercise, not exercising, falls, accidents, lifting heavy objects, even carrying children around on a hip.
Chemical stress is caused by the air that we breathe, drugs, medication, alcohol, as well as chemicals in our food, cleaning supplies and personal care products.
And then of course, there’s emotional stress. We all know what that’s about.
Our bodies take in all this stress through the senses as information, and when the nervous system cannot process it all, the body stores it as tension. Physical stress can literally knock a bone out of place, putting pressure on the nerves and blocking the vital flow of information between the brain and the body. Meanwhile, the tension caused by chemical and emotional stress can impinge on nerves as well, affecting how well the nervous system functions.
